I didn’t grow up wanting to be a teacher. I mean… I did set up my massive rag tag of stuffed animals in the bed for class. I did +have a desk that I would park them in for mentoring. And I did have my very own pointer and chalkboard… OKAY, so maybe I did want to grow up and become a teacher I just didn’t know it yet. Not officially.
The journey for me becoming (Ms. Sahara) the educator. Teehee. Was just about me doing what came naturally and also what was hiring once I was done with corporate America. Turns out I love teaching. I thought I had a passion for the little tykes, but after a year in early childhood I quickly discovered that is not the case. I can only do a day or so a week with anyone 5 and under. With middle schoolers I found a fondness for teaching and learning classroom management became second nature. High schoolers give me the opportunity to have more adult conversations. No matter the age though, I keep it real with my students. Often deviating from traditional teaching. Teaching has given me freedom in the same way traveling does. I didn’t go to school for it. I’m certified as a sub and a teaching artist, but other than that I’m good. My next journey is a MFA to be a professor. Tricks of the profession Not really a trick, more so a tip. You can travel and teach. *gasp* Say wha!!!? Oh yea, you can teach anywhere around the world. I’m also looking into getting my TEFL. That’s why I applied (and got accepted) to the Peace Corps. The only reason I’m not trotting off to Ethiopia is… (money, commitments, and money) Oh to be young acting dumb. I made a lot of questionable choices in my early 20’s that I am answering for now. This means twiddling my thumbs while I’m paying the debt. In the meantime I’m still doing what I love. In teaching I’m able to teach things I know. Robotics and coding. Drama. Writing. Poetry. English. It’s also helpful that I’m a artist that is active in the community so I’m able to really teach by doing. Those that do, also teach. Plus, non-Traditional teaching is a great way to make a lol extra on the way without a full-time commitment. I’m the first to admit that I may not be the next Blog Abroad, (You should check out Glo, do it) but I’m creating my own way. What works for others may not work for you If everyone was the same we’d be in a freaky Pleasantville scenario that tread on the line of creepy than pleasant. We have to stop thinking that just because someone else is successful at what they do that we should imitate them. We can find their own thing. I’m honest about what I will commit too. I know blogs and I aren’t the best. However, I love writing. I may not be a business blogger just yet. But for now this is working for me. *If you’ve been keeping up with me just hang in there as with any new habits, it takes a bit. |
